Netherstorm Frenzy: Battlegrounds Update (10/5/21)

  • New Tribe: Ethereals

Ethereals thrive in chaos: stealing your minions, distorting carefully arranged board placements, and blinking in and out of existence over the course of battle. Can you overcome their Reborn synergies to decipher their enigmatic ways?

  • New Heroes: Saraad and Gezhe

What does an energy-camel rider and a conniving merchant have in common? They’re both mummified beings of sheer energy. They both don’t need sleep. And they’re both ready to unleash pandemonium on the battlegrounds!

  • New System: Rifts

The Twisting Nether has deluged the Battlegrounds in an aura of mayhem! Random effects are bursting into reality and disrupting the battles. It’s a mess. Thankfully, Millhouse Manastorm can help you prepare for the effects before they arrive

Now your preeminent cards—Baron Rivendare, Tony Two-Rusk, Lil’ Rag—can all be safe for a combat round as long as you’re willing to pay up for the services!

Random Effects

New Resource: Energy

Battles now reward you with a new resource: Energy! Energy can be deposited in two different slots during the Recruit Phase. This controls whether the next Rift will be skipped or played. Individuals can only see their deposits, and will have to predict other players’ decisions. You can think of this as a nifty, simple little way of avoiding pitfalls. It can go both ways, however, and you might occasionally find yourself missing out on a Rift you were hoping to build around.

Rifts are now periodically opening during games. They affect all players. The effects can be either beneficial or disruptive. All Rifts—along with their durations—can be seen far in advance, allowing players to select their hero and minions in order to strategically overcome the effects. Or harmonize with them.

But Wait, There’s More!

Clusters

On rare occasions, you might find yourself confronted with multiple effects at once! The Twisting Nether is an unpredictable place, and the Rifts can amalgamate into some truly dastardly combinations. What sort of struggles await you when two or three of them are active at the same time?

New Cosmetics

You might stumble upon a whole galaxy of new costumes, voice lines, and emotes at the start of this patch: incandescent space wrappings, nebulous nether voices, and obscure symbols to flaunt in battle — it can all be yours! Hop onto the battlefield now to initiate your reward track and claim these prizes as your own.
